UN VRAI GAMIN

Si vous parlez à un(e) Français(e) qui a à peu près mon âge (la quarantaine bien tassée), et que vous lui demandez le nom d’une émission qui a marqué sa jeunesse, je peux vous parier cher qu’au moins sept ou huit fois sur dix, le nom Récré A2 leur viendra aux lèvres. Et quand j’y pense, je suis de nouveau gamin, assis devant la télé le mercredi, journée sans école à l’époque. 

A kid at heartIf you talk to a French person who is roughly my age (way on the wrong side of forty), and you ask them the name of a show which had an impact on their youth, I can bet you that at least seven or eight out of ten will utter the words Récré A2. And when I think about it, I’m a kid again, sitting in front of the TV on a Wednesday morning, a day without school at the time. 

Cette émission culte, pleine de dessins animés (la plupart japonais ou d’origine japonaise), résume en elle-même ma jeunesse. Et c’est là l’essence de la nostalgie, non? Ce petit quelque chose qui vous rappelle de bons souvenirs, des expériences spéciales ou de tous les jours, et qui vous marquent. Et puisque je m’en souviens comme si c’etait hier, il est bien évident que ces dessins animés m’ont marqué. 

This show had cult symbol, and was crammed full of cartoons (Japanese for the most part, or of Japanese origin), and sums up my youth. And isn’t it the essence of nostalgia, right there? This little something that brings back good memories, special or everyday experiences, and that affect you. And as I remember them as if it were yesterday, it is obvious that they had an effect on me. 

Il y en avait tellement: Albator, Goldorak, Candy, Ulysse 31, les Mystérieuses Cités d’Or et surtout Capitaine Flam. Ces séries ont bercé mon enfance et j’avais hâte d’être à mercredi pour toutes les retrouver. Que ce soit voyager avec les conquistadores en Amérique du Sud ou à travers l’espace avec le capitaine, c’était là de belles aventures qui me faisaient rêver.

There were so many of them: Captain Harlock, UFO Robot Grendizer, Candy Candy, Ulysses 31, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, and above all, Captain Future. These series rocked my childhood, and I couldn’t wait for Wednesdays to watch them all. Whether it was travelling with the conquistadores in South America or through space with the Captain, there were beautiful adventures that let me dream. 

Alors en écrivant cet article, je me suis posé une seule question: est-ce au fond une mauvaise chose que de se laisser retomber en enfance de temps en temps? Je crois vraiment que non, et c’est avec grand plaisir que je regarde quelquefois un ou deux épisodes de mes séries préférées, la plupart disponibles de nos jours sur Internet. So, while writing this post, I asked myself just one question: deep down, is it a bad thing that to let oneself fall back into one’s childhood world from time to time? I truly believe that it isn’t, and it is with great pleasure that I sometimes watch a few episodes of my favourite series, most of them available on the Internet nowadays.
