Foul and fair weather

Let’s face it: I am more British than I normally care to admit. I have just celebrated 20 years in Great-Britain and could almost pass for a native. Almost being the operative word. As Sting once said, ‘you can hear it when I talk’, albeit not a lot, and you can witness my ‘Frenchness’ whenever French sports people or teams do well. Or badly.

There is, however, a typically, almost stereotypically, British concern that I have adopted as mine: I do enjoy talking about the weather. Foul or fair, let’s face it, any conversation with a Brit must contain at least one allusion to the state of the sky and what might possibly come down from it.

Although less important now that I live out of the urban, ambient London greyness, a bit of rain is still an event worth mentionning, especially when it stops me doing anything I had planned to do on a particular day. Equally important is the dry, sunny or otherwise, weather, which lets me do as I please at ALK HQ.

I have already mentioned a certain charming young lady who hails from Manilla, who, at least as far as I am concerned, is lucky to enjoy positively tropical weather. The only issue I have with her is that she hates the sun and heat, and loves the rain… Whenever I mention said rain in Henley, she rejoices for me, knowing full well that I hate it! But it is done in jest and I take no offence in that…

The last time this happened made me reflect on my ‘Britishness’ about it all, so I thought I would come and ask you, dear friends and readers, what kind of weather you enjoy and whether it forms regular part of your conversations, whatever the language they happen to be in. Let me know!

Back home

Travels are good for the soul, they say, and I would tend to agree. I love visiting places I have never been to before, discovering new countries, cultures and people along the way. There is, however, something equally magical about coming home.

In my case, returning to ALK HQ is always something worth looking forward to, due to the fact that I love the cottage, and its immediate surroundings. I have already written of the pleasure I take out of gardening, baking and generally living there, and I stand by that. Let’s just hope that the rest of the season is going to be a good one. You never know, we might even enjoy a bit of an Indian summer.

Whatever the weather, I shall be hard at work, both in and out of the house, as I have to get going on volume 3 of ‘the book’, on top of preparing to host the Hambleden church tea (with a lot of help from Penny and Julia) at the end of the month, and getting to grip with the garden, which will no doubt have gone wild in my absence.

There might also be some guests coming to stay, which is always a joyous occasion, and a good opportunity for a spot of general tidying (not that the place is usually a mess, but you know how it is!). Having been away, I do love to come back home and entertain, having been perfectly looked after for a fortnight. So it will be my turn to cook and bake, making sure that my guests are happy, well fed and certainly well ‘watered’. I’m not sure whose turn it is, so the list is open! If you fancy coming to dinner and chatting in French, give me a call and I’ll put your name on the list!

From the middle of nowhere

I am typing this, looking out onto greyness. A north Atlantic greyness to be precise. You see, I am en route to Iceland, on board the Queen Elizabeth, and it is one of the sea days of this voyage. Having left the simply beautiful Geiranger fjord last night, we are now boldly sailing towards nothing, it seems. The sea is grey (but not too mountainous, which is a blessing), the sky is grey, and it is raining, which explains why I am indoors, sipping on a cappuccino.

The only splashes of colour out there are the occasional seabirds flying by the ship. I haven’t checked yet, but I am pretty sure they are from the gannet family. Whatever they are, they are fascinating, skimming the waves and soaring effortlessly back up again, without beating their wings. I know some of you will already be bored, thinking that I am too, while others may be almost jealous of my quiet time in the middle of nowhere.

Let me reassure you that I am far from bored. As I sit here, warm and comfortable, I am totally relaxed for the first time in a long while. A rather wonderful period, which started with my birthday dinners (yes, plural) is continuing with this wonderful (yes, twice) cruise. Having stopped in Holland and Norway, we will soon reach Iceland, before returning to Southampton via the Faroe and Orkney islands.

I know that this type of holiday is not for everyone, but I am content, happy, relaxed, pampered and busy. In other words, I have nothing to be unhappy about, and that is exactly how I like it. True, I am eating too much and my daily excursions to the gym for a spot of rowing are not helping much, but do you hear me complaining? That must be because the north Atlantic winds are howling way too loudly…

A starry dinner

Some of you, dear friends and readers, will remember last week’s blog about a certain birthday weekend? (If not, you can read it here.) Well, I felt a little bit guilty, having abandoned you after sitting down for my second birthday dinner.

So, to take up where I had left you: G and I are sitting at the bar at the Hand and Flowers, Tom Kerridge’s 2 Michelin star pub in Marlow, just down the road from ALK HQ. We are at the bar, because the restaurant is full!! But you know what? It proved to be the best table. Anthony and Russell looked after us so well, and they were so knowledgeable about everything behind the bar and on the menu.

Our dishes also came directly from the kitchen, brought on by the lads who prepared it for us, which, to a foodie like me, is just fab. We started with the H&F warm Gala pie for G and the ham and mushroom terrine for me, which were both delightful. So delightful that we had to share the summer radish and haggis tart… I know, self-control was never my thing! Those starters were only three of the seven available on the menu, and I promise you that I could have enjoyed all of them.

The mains didn’t disappoint either: the slow-cooked duck was perfect, as was the duck and sweet pea tart accompanying it, and G devoured his venison ravenously. I don’t know how the chips are done, but they simply were delicious.

A surprising milk toffee tart and an apricot and custard slice rounded up a superb meal, one that will stay with me for a long time. Would it surprise you to know I have just written about it all from memory, without even looking at the menu? Of course, the food was sublime, but the setting and, even more importantly, the people made it a meal to remember. From start to finish, I really felt that a lot of attention went into every detail of that evening. So Mister Kerridge, a huge thank you to you and your team for my second birthday dinner.
