I need a change!

When a man is tired of London, … You know the line. I have been living in London for the past fifteen years and I have to say that at the moment, its delights do not make up for its greyness, the leaden skies and let’s face it, the mass of people. I know it is silly to complain about things that are totally out of your control, but it is all getting to me right now.

If I really think about it, I realise that I need to see the sun, blue skies and less people. A bit of an unrealistic expectation right now, in the capital, in early March, but a man can dream, can’t he? Honestly, I think it is slightly more than a bit of winter sun I need. I feel that a move ‘to the country’ would be a start.

I know how this sounds: another Londoner, jaded and bored, who dreams of green fields and a (not so) little cottage somewhere remote, away from it all. But I’m not a Londoner, I live in London, and that makes all the difference. Most of the nearly twenty years since I arrived in Britain have been spent in towns and cities: Glasgow, Winchester and London. But I am more of a small village type of person.

Since I teach most of my students via Skype these days, I can do this from almost anywhere, so that not so little cottage would be great right now, surrounded by trees and some other green things. You know, shrubs, flowers, grass, that sort of thing. Throw in a dog or two, for daily walks and company, and we’re there, I think. Even without the sun and blue skies. Now is that really too much to ask?
