It had been a long time

Not very long ago, I had arranged to meet friends I had not seen in a while, and we settled for Sunday lunch. And to make life easier for all, we agreed to meet up halfway between our respective locations, which happened to be Winchester.

Some of you may know that many moons ago, I was very happy to call this wonderful city home. I was teaching in Basingstoke at the time, but lived in a charming little house on Mile End Road. Nothing grand, but nicely situated for a good walk to the local pub and the city centre, though the cathedral close.

Lunch was a jolly affair, and my friends and I reminisced for a few hours over a good meal and a bottle of wine. Then, after we said good bye, I took the time to walk back into town, to see what had changed. I had spent three happy years in Winchester, and many good memories came flooding back.

Although I was sad to see so many shops closed on a portion of the high street, I was also glad to see that a vast majority of the city had not changed and was very busy, even on a Sunday afternoon. Clearly, I was not the only person enjoying the cathedral, Wolvesey Castle, the city Mill, or taking a stroll along the river Itchen. I even passed the house where Jane Austen died. Many of you will know she lived in Hampshire for the best part of her life, and is buried in the cathedral.

It did feel good to be back in Winchester, if only for a few hours. I must make sure that I return again soon, to appreciate its many treasures. Which makes me think: what about you, dear friends and readers? Which village, town or city brings back happy memories? Make sure to let me know with a comment!

That’s a lot of water!

Eleven feet and four inches, or three meters forty-five. That’s how high the Thames was on April 2nd, at 4pm, the exact moment I am typing these lines. And why, I hear you ask, dear friends and readers, should I share this information with you? Because the river has just started ‘eating’ my back garden!

Normally peacefully sitting at or under the 8 feet mark, this is getting a little bit out of hand and I have to say that I would not want to see it go any higher overnight, thank you very much! The few streams I can monitor during my daily walk, and which usually look very benign and peaceful, are swollen and have started flooding the fields. Should it continue to rain upstream and in the immediate vicinity in the coming week, I am afraid we are going to have a problem here on our hands, at ALK HQ.

That said, the property is well built, has been protected against flood water (up to a certain point) during its recent refurbishment, and is quite a long way from the river, so I am not overly worried. In the two winters I have spent in the charming village of Mill End, with the usually placid River Thames at the bottom of my garden, I have not even thought about having to hoist my furniture upstairs or evacuate the house.

Let’s just hope that I will not have to do either now, especially as technically speaking, it is not winter anymore! I know that you, regular reader and newcomer alike, will wish me well in the coming days. You will be able to follow the progress of this little saga (very minute so far!) on your favourite social platform, whether it be Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, as I will no doubt post updates, hopefully for the better. And quite obviously, I look forward to seeing you there!
