UN BON BOUQUIN

Je ne lis plus assez. C’est un constat assez triste à faire, voire même effarant, mais c’est vrai. Mes étudiants, aussi sympa soient-ils, me tiennent occupé du matin au soir: préparation, corrections, cours eux-mêmes. Tout cela prend beaucoup de temps. Et en plus de ça, il me faut penser à ma présence sur les médias sociaux, qui occupent eux aussi une bonne partie de ma journée.

A good read     I don’t read enough anymore. It’s a sad state of affair, astonishing even, but it is true. My students, as cool as they are, keep me busy from morning to night: preparation, corrections, lessons themselves. All this takes a lot of time. And on top of that, I have to think about my presence on social media, which also keep me busy for a good chunk of the day.

J’adore tout ça, bien sûr, et offrir autant d’aide que je peux à tous ceux qui me le demandent me fait tellement plaisir. Les réponses de plus en plus nombreuses au quiz et autres petits exercices que je propose sur Twitter, Facebook et Instagram me disent également que vous êtes chaque jour plus en plus nombreux à essayer votre français avec moi.

I love it all, of course, and offering as much help as I can to all those who ask for it makes me very happy. The responses, more and more frequent, to the quiz and other little exercises I offer on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram also tell me that more and more of you are trying your French for size with me every day.

Mais je m’égare (encore une fois, bien entendu)! Car en fait, je voulais vous parler du fait que malgré mon amour pour la lecture, je n’ai pas beaucoup de temps à y consacrer ces temps-ci. Je lis surtout avant d’éteindre la lumière le soir, mais je suis souvent trop fatigué pour lire plus que quelques pages, alors même un bon bouquin ne suffit plus à me tenir éveillé!

But I digress (again, of course!). Because, actually, I wanted to tell you that despite my love of reading, I don’t have much time to devote to it these days. I read mostly before turning the light out, but I am often too tired to read more than a few pages, so even a great read is not enough to keep me awake!

Il y a bien sûr des exceptions à la règle, et Rough Music, un roman de Patrick Gale, y réussi haut la main. Je l’ai presque fini, et je n’arrive pas à m’en arracher. Pour une fois, je n’essaie pas de deviner ce qui va se passer, car l’action, le format et la prose de M. Gale m’emportent aussi facilement que le vent emporte une feuille morte. Je sais, pas terrible, comme image, alors je laisserai à Patrick Gale le soin d’écrire des choses plus jolies et efficaces.

There are of course exceptions to the rule, and Rough Music, a novel by Patrick Gale, manages without trying. I’ve almost finished it, and I can’t wrench myself from it. For once, I am not trying to guess what’s going to happen, because the action, the format and Mr. Gale’s prose are carrying me as easily as the wind picks up a dead leaf. I know, not a great image, so I will it to Patrick Gale to write prettier things, and more efficiently.

Aller, je retourne à son roman, même si je ne veux vraiment pas le finir si tôt, pour pouvoir commencer un autre bon bouquin dès que j’aurai fini celui-là. Right, I’m going back to his novel, even though I really don’t want to finish it so soon, in order to be able to pick up another good read as soon as I finish this one.
