LE COCHON PRES DE BATH

Je sais déjà ce que vous allez me dire: il n’y a pas si longtemps, je vous parlais d’une visite à Belfast, et cette semaine, je vais vous parler d’un petit séjour un peu plus près de chez moi, mais tout aussi dépaysant. Le Pig near Bath, ou le Cochon près de Bath si vous voulez, est un hôtel qui se situe, comme son nom l’indique, près de cette ville magnifique, dans un batîment très élégant, au bout d’une longue allée. 

I already know what you are going to tell me: not long ago, I was telling you about a visit to Belfast, and this week, I’m going to tell you about a short stay a little closer to home, but just as exotic. The Pig near Bath is a hotel which can be found, as its name indicates, near this wonderful city, in a very elegant building, at the end of a long drive.

Notre accueil fut très chaleureux, et la jeune équipe, qui s’est très bien occupée de nous, est vraiment à la hauteur. J’ai aussi adoré le décor, qui est très intéressant: un mélange d’antiquités et de pièces plus récentes, voire modernes. La chambre et son lit, que j’ai essayé dès mon arrivée, étaient si confortables que j’ai dormi comme un loir.

The welcome was warm, and the young team, which took great care of us, is really up to scratch. I also loved the décor, which is very interesting: a mix of antiques and of more recent pieces, or indeed modern. The bedroom and its bed, which I tried as soon as I arrived, were so comfortable that I slept like a log.

Mais avant cela, un dîner vraiment excellent m’attendait, après un apéritif au bar. Je ne sais pas si c’est le cas pour vous, mais le meilleur des repas peut être totalement gâché par un service moins que parfait. Je suis content de vous dire que ce ne fût pas le cas: encore une fois, un service très professionnel mais agréable nous a aidé à passé une super soirée. 

But before all that, a truly excellent dinner was waiting for me, after a preprandial drink at the bar. I don’t know if you feel the same, but the best of meals can be ruined by less than perfect service. I am so happy to report that it didn’t happen here: once again, a very professional but friendly service helped us have a great evening.

La philosophie qui étaie les efforts de Robin Hutson et de sa femme Judy est évidente dans l’attention au détail, à tous ces petits riens qui font un tout si important. Savoir que les légumes servis au dîner ont poussé dans le jardin et que les autres ingrédients sont locaux, par exemple, me remplit de joie. Ainsi que de faire la connaissance des poules et des cailles qui fournissent les oeufs. 

The philosophy that underpins the efforts of Robin Hutson and his wife Judy is obvious in the attention to detail, in all these little nothings that amounts to a whole lot of important. Knowing that the vegetables served at dinner grew in the garden and that the other ingredients are local, for example, fills me with joy. Just as does meeting the hens and the quails giving us eggs.

Alors bien sûr, je vous recommande chaudement un passage dans l’un des Cochons, si je puis dire, car je suis sûr que les cousins de celui de Bath sont tout aussi admirables. Même si ça n’est que pour un déjeuner ou un dîner, vous ne le regretterez pas. Et bien sûr, si vous passez par celui de Bath, dites-moi ce que vous en pensez! 

So of course, I warmly recommend a passage in one of the Pigs, if I may say so, as I am sure that the cousins of the Bath’s one are just as remarkable. Even if it’s only for lunch, you will not regret it. And of course, if you drop by the one near Bath, let me know what you think!
