UN NOUVEAU LANDMARK

À l’heure où j’écris ces lignes, chers amis et lecteurs, je suis le seul à être debout, car nous sommes dimanche, et il est à peine sept heures du matin. Mes compagnons d’aventure, y compris mon mari, sont encore au lit. Je ne leur en veux pas du tout, car ils ont le droit de se reposer. Quant à moi, je suis tout à fait content de mon sort : le canapé où je suis assis est confortable, ma tasse de thé est à portée de main, et la vue à travers la vieille fenêtre devant moi est à couper le souffle. Je suis dans le Dorset, sur la côte sud de notre belle île, et je suis heureux.

A new Landmark At the time of writing these lines, dear friends and readers, I am the only one up, as it is Sunday, and it is barely seven in the morning. My adventurous companions, which include my husband, are still in bed. I don’t mind at all, as they have every right to have a rest. As for me, I am completely content with my lot: the sofa I am sitting in is comfortable, I can easily reach my cup of tea, and the view through the old window facing me is breathtaking. I am in Dorset, on the south coast of our beautiful island, and I am happy.

Grâce au Landmark Trust, mon chez-moi pour le week-end est une vieille demeure, Dunshay Manor, sur l’île de Purbeck. C’est une très belle région, sur la côte du Jurassique, comme on l’appelle ici. Même si je ne sais toujours pas si on prononce son nom Dun-shay ou Duns-hay, mes amis et moi, qui nous retrouvons une fois par an pour un week-end ensemble, avons beaucoup apprécié la maison et ses environs. Les premières pierres de cette belle demeure datent du 16e siècle, et elle a appartenu à plusieurs familles, avant d’accueillir la sculpteure Mary Spencer Watson.

Thanks to the Landmark Trust, my home for the weekend is an old house, Dunshay Manor, on the Isle of Purbeck. It’s a beautiful area, on the Jurassic Coast, as we call it here. Even if I still don’t know if its name is pronounced Dun-shay ou Duns-hay, my friends and I, who meet once a year for a weekend together, have loved the house and its surroundings. The first stones of this beautiful building date from the 16th century, and it has belonged to several families before welcoming Mary Spencer Watson, a sculptor.

Comme d’habitude, nous sommes tous arrivés vendredi en fin d’après-midi, venus des quatre coins du pays. Et pendant deux jours, nous passons du temps ensemble dans un lieu plein d’histoire et de découvertes. Nous sommes allés faire quelques courses pour le dîner à Swanage, où nous avons visité la jetée et respiré l’air marin avec un café sur la plage. L’après-midi, nous avons pris un grand bol d’histoire et de vent en visitant le château de Corfe, en ruine depuis des siècle, mais très impressionnant quand même avec ses mille ans d’existence. Je vous en parlerai peut-être plus une autre fois, quand j’aurai fait plus de recherches.

As always, we all arrived late afternoon on Friday, having travelled from the four corners of the country. And for two days, we’re spending time together in a place full of history and things to discover. We went to buy supplies for dinner in Swanage, where we visited the pier and took in the sea air with a coffee on the beach. In the afternoon, we took a big lungful of history and wind during our visit of Corfe Castle, in ruins for centuries, but still very impressive with its throusand year history. I might tell you more about it another time, once I have done some research.

Le but de ce week-end loin de chez nous est de nous retrouver au moins une fois par an, pour échanger toutes nos nouvelles et renouer notre forte amitié. Même si le groupe n’est jamais tout à fait le même d’année en année, tout le monde se connait. On prépare nos repas, on rit, on lit, on écoute de la musique, et on va marcher. Le programme du week-end n’est jamais fixé à l’avance, mais on trouve toujours de quoi s’occuper pendant notre séjour. Cette fois, mon mari et moi devons rentrer à ALK HQ ce soir, car nous avons beaucoup à faire lundi, mais nous pourrions rester jusqu’à demain matin. Dommage !

The aim of this weekend far from home is to meet up at least once a year, to swap all our news and renew our strong friendship. Even if the group is never exactly the same from year to year, we all know each other. We cook meals, we laugh, we read, we listen to music, and we go walking. The program for the weekend is never fixed in advance, but we always find enough to do during our stay. This time, my husband and I must return to ALK HQ tonight, as we have a lot to do on Monday, but we could have stayed until tomorrow morning. Pity!
