The coffee minefield

To the uninitiated, ordering coffee in France can be a bit of a nightmare. To be honest, even to the initiated, it can be difficult. You’re pretty safe with the more exotic drinks. Ask for a cappuccino or a latte, and you probably will get just that. The quality of it will depend of who’s supplying it, and in towns with several cafés, you’ll have to do your homework before you can decide. Of course, you can go to your friendly neighbourhood chains, but that’s cheating.

Let’s go to the local café and ask for un café. You will be served a very short espresso. To this day, it is the cheapest drink there, and if you have it standing at the bar, it’s even cheaper. If you want something longer and milky, you should ask for un grand crème. But even then, the milk might be already mixed or on the side, hot or cold, depending on le patron. What happens if you just want a long black coffee? In restaurants, you can try to ask for un café filtre, but these days, you’re better off asking for un americano. I cannot guarantee what would happen at the café, so don’t blame me if you are stared at with a tone of incomprehension.

UNE MINE DANS LE CAFÉ

Pour le non-initié, commander un café en France peut être un vrai cauchemar. Pour dire vrai, même pour celui qui s’y connaît, ça n’est pas toujours facile. Avec les boissons un peu plus exotiques, c’est plutôt facile. Demandez un cappuccino ou un latte, et c’est ce qu’on vous servira. Leur qualité dépendra de l’établissement, et dans les localités où vous avez le choix entre plusieurs cafés, vous devrez faire vos devoirs avant de pouvoir choisir. Bien sûr, vous pouvez toujours vous rabattre sur les grandes chaînes, mais c’est de la triche.

Asseyons-nous au café local et demandons ‘un café’. On vous apportera un espresso très court. Même aujourd’hui, c’est ce qu’il y a de moins cher, et si vous le buvez debout au bar, c’est encore moins cher. Si vous voulez quelque chose de plus consistant et au lait, essayez ‘un grand crème’. Mais même dans ces cas-là, le lait peut arriver séparément, froid ou chaud, ou déjà mélangé; ça depend juste du patron. Et si vous voulez juste un café noir? Dans les restaurants, essayez ‘un café filtre’, mais ces jours-ci, vous feriez mieux de demander ‘un américano’. Je n’ai aucune idée de ce qui se passerait au café de tout à l’heure, alors je ne peux pas être tenu responsable si on vous regarde avec des yeux de merlan frit.
