MES MOTS PRÉFÉRÉS: LES ADJECTIFS

Et finalement. Le dernier de mes tops 5. Cette fois, c’est au tour de l’humble adjectif. Cette catégorie a été, pour une raison inconnue, la plus difficile à compiler, vu qu’il y a tellement d’adjectifs utiles, mignons ou expressifs. Je crois que la sélection d’aujourd’hui ne rendra pas justice à ces outils pratiques, alors une nouvelle sélection apparaîtra bientôt sur vos écrans. Voici le premier round.

And finally. The last of my top 5 lists. This time, it’s the humble adjective’s turn. This category was, for some reason, the most difficult to chose from, as there are so many useful, pretty or indeed expressive adjectives. I feel that today’s selection will not do these very handy tools justice, so there probably will be another selection appearing on your screens soon. Here’s round one:

rond [ʁɔ̃]: round en anglais. Ici encore, le son, et plus précisément la forme des lèvres et le placement de la langue quand on le prononce font de cet adjectif un pur plaisir. Je le trouve aussi très représentatif de sa signification!

rond [ʁɔ̃]: round. Here again, the sound, or more precisely the shape of the lips and the placement of the tongue when you pronounce it make of this adjective a pure delight. I also find it very representative of its meaning! .

vilain [vilɛ̃]: ugly, nasty, naughty. J’adore cet adjectif, car son sens précis (et donc sa traduction en anglais) ne devient clair qu’en contexte et avec la bonne intonation. Je trouve qu’il peut être aussi bien positif que négatif, ce qui est assez marrant.

vilain[vilɛ̃]: ugly, nasty, naughty. I love this adjective, because its full meaning only becomes clear in context and with the correct intonation. I find it can be as positive or as negative as you like, which makes it fun.

scintillant [sɛ̃tijɑ̃]: sparkling. Utilisé seulement en parlant de lumière (le vin est pétillant), j’apprécie l’orthographe et la prononciation difficiles de cet adjectif. Mais le fait que vous pouvez aussi l’utiliser pour décrire un diamant ou une conversation le rend aussi très polyvalent!

scintillant[sɛ̃tijɑ̃]: sparkling. Used only in terms of light (the wine would be ‘pétillant’), I appreciate the difficult spelling and pronunciation of this adjective. But the fact that you can also use it to describe a diamond or a conversation makes it versatile, too.

spectaculaire [spɛktakylɛʁ]: spectacular. Celui-là, juste parce que vous devriez tout simplement apprécier un adjectif de quatre syllabes, qui vous rempli la bouche non seulement de délice mais aussi d’autant d’émerveillement que le sujet décrit!

moche [mɔʃ]: ugly. Je sais, c’est le deuxième mot avec le même sens. Mais celui-là est négatif, et ce sans équivoque: court, cassant, brusque, vous pouvez le cracher et personne ne doutera de vos sentiment! J’aime bien ça…

moche [mɔʃ]: ugly. I know, that’s the second word with the same meaning. But this one is unequivocally negative: short, curt, terse, you can spit it out and nobody would be in any doubt about your feelings! I like that…
