DU SUR-MESURE

Vous qui me suivez sur Twitter ou Instagram sauront que le QG d’ALK vient de changer d’adresse, et que dorénavant, je me la coule douce dans le charmant village de Checkendon. Je ne me suis pas trop éloigné du site précédent, car le cottage près de la Tamise est à peine à vingt kilomètres de mon nouveau chez-moi. Pour être totalement honnête, même si la maison m’appartient, je n’y suis toujours pas installé, mais j’ai hâte de tourner cette nouvelle page. Et c’est là qu’Andy entre sur la scène. 

Custom-made You who follow me on Twitter or Instagram will know that ALK HQ has a new address, and that from now on, I will be living the sweet life in the charming village of Checkendon. I am not too far from the previous site, as the cottage by the Thames is barely 15 miles from my new home. To be totally honest, even if the house is mine, I am still not settled there, but I look forward to opening that chapter. And that is where Andy comes onto the stage. 

Je connais Andy, un talentueux menuisier, parce que c’est lui qui est responsable de la cuisine là où j’habite depuis cinq ans. Il a tout fait lui-même, et la qualité de son travail est hors pair. J’entends certain d’entre vous me demander non seulement pourquoi je vous parle d’Andy, mais aussi pourquoi je n’ai toujours pas emménagé dans cette maison dont j’ai longtemps rêvé. La raison est très simple : je veux que tout y soit aussi parfait que possible avant d’y poser mes bagages. Rien de tel qu’un peu de planning pour vous simplifier la vie. Du moins, c’est ce que je pense. 

I know Andy, a talented carpenter, because he is responsible for the kitchen where I have lived for the past five years. He did it all himself, and the quality of his work is out of this world. I hear some of you ask me why I am telling you about Andy, but also why I still have not moved into this house I have dreamt of for so long. The reason is simple : I want everything to be as perfect as possible before dropping my suitcases there. There’s nothing like a bit of planning to make life simpler. At least, I think so. 

Quant à Andy, sa présence ici s’explique par la construction d’une bibliothèque sur-mesure dans le salon, ainsi que d’un placard dans la buanderie (ampoules, sacs pour l’aspirateur, produits de ménage), et d’un autre dans la cuisine, où je vais ranger tous mes ingrédients à gâteaux et autres choses essentielles dans la cuisine, comme les épices et autres condiments. Il est donc important pour moi de voir toutes ces merveilles terminées avant d’habiter ici à temps complet.

As for Andy, his presence here is explained by the construction of a custom-made bookcase in the living-room, and of a cupboard in the utility room (light bulbs, vacuum cleaner bags, cleaning products), and of another in the kitchen, where I am going to keep all my baking supplies and all other essential things in the kitchen, such as spices and other condiments. It is therefore important to me that all this marvellous things be finished before I live here full time. 

Il en est de même avec mon bureau. Cependant, en ce qui concerne mon nouvel espace de travail, ma patience est à l’épreuve : l’ossature est là, les étagères sont prêtes, mais le tout attend encore les quelques couches de peinture (une teinte de vert exquise) qui donneront à cette pièce une allure très tranquille et professionnelle. Enfin, tous mes livres et autres ressources seront rangées, et j’aurai un espace où travailler et accueillir mes étudiants en grand confort.

The same thing  applies to my office. However, as far as my new work space is concerned, my patience is being tested : the backbone is there, the shelves are ready, but the whole is still waiting for the few coats of paint (an exquisite shade of green) which will give to this room a quiet and professional tone. At last, all my books and other resources will be tidied away, and I will have a space where I can welcome my students in great comfort.

Voilà pourquoi ce déménagement, annoncé depuis plusieurs semaines, se fait attendre. Je veux que tout soit prêt dans la nouvelle maison avant d’y dormir pour la première fois, et de descendre dans la cuisine pour notre premier petit déjeuner. Comme pour mes cours, je préfère la préparation aux devoirs, alors je prends mon mal en patience, en quelque sorte. Mais ne vous inquiétez pas, je vous montrerai le résultat de tout ce travail. A bientôt ! 

This is why this move, annonced a few weeks ago, is still in progress. I want everything to be ready in the new house before sleeping there for the first time, and going down to the kitchen for our first breakfast. As for my lessons, I prefer preparation to homework, so I am sitting on my hands, so to speak. But don’t worry, I will show you the result of all this work. See you soon !
