A little elephant

Last Monday, I was the guest of a very talented artist, Rosamond Lloyd, and of Adam Paddon, who was welcoming us to Sculpture Castings Ltd, an art foundry in Basingstoke. And there, all three us were present at the birth of an elephant calf… But, faced by your incredulity, I think I have to go back a bit, so as to give you a little bit more explanations!

The fact is, I fell in love with a little bronze elephant, galloping, his trunk and ears to the wind, towards a stork flying off. During the Henley Festival, Rosamond was there, in full glam, working on one of her clay sculptures, a life-sized buffalo’s head. And there, just next to it, my baby elephant. True love at first sight. It didn’t take me long to take the decision to adopt him.

So last Monday, Adam made me discover all the stages that lead to the ‘birth’ of this little treasure. The silicon moulds that register all the details, even the most minute ones, of the original sculpture. The wax positive which comes out of it, the creation of a ‘solid’ mould around the wax, the negative created once the wax melts away in the furnace, and, finally, the liquid bronze at 1,100 degrees, which fills this mould and reproduces the original in all its splendour.

I won’t even tell you about my anxiety when Adam attacked the barely cold mould with blows from a big hammer! But a few seconds later, there it was, and I saw its little cheeky eyes watching me. I still have a few days to wait before it arrives home, when Rosamond herself will bring him!

By the way, my new little friend (that’s him in the picture) is still missing a name, so if you have an idea on that topic, let me know!
