DES FEMMES D’INFLUENCE

Si vous lisez ce blog depuis le début (ou presque), vous saurez que j’ai habité à Orléans pendant un certain nombre d’années, et c’est en pensant à cette période de ma vie que m’est venue l’idée de vous parler de femmes d’influence, si nombreuses dans la société française à travers les âges. Sainte Jeanne d’Arc, la Pucelle d’Orléans, est la première de ces femmes. De son village de Domrémy à sa mort sur le bûcher à Rouen à l’âge de 19 ans, elle a laissé une trace indélébile sur l’histoire de France, après avoir fait couronné Charles VII et libéré la ville alors occupée par les forces anglaises.

Women of influence If you’ve been reading this blog since the beginning (or close enough), you will know that I lived in Orléans for a number of years, and it is while thinking about this period of my life that I had the idea of telling you about women of influence, of which there have been many in French society throughout the ages. Saint Joan of Arc, the Maiden of Orléans, is the first of these women. From her village of Domrémy to her death at the stake in Rouen at the age of 19, she left an unforgettable trace in French history, after helping Charles VII to get crowned and liberating the town from the occupying English forces. 

Plusieurs siècles plus tard, c’est une heroïne de roman du même nom qui apparaît dans l’oeuvre d’Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin, plus connue sous le nom de plume de George Sand. Cette grande dame de la littérature française à toute sa vie poussé les limites imposées aux femmes à travers son talent d’écrivaine, sa façon de s’habiller et ses libres amours, notemment avec Frédéric Chopin. On retrouve sa ferme opinion quant à l’égalité entre hommes et femmes à travers sa vie et son oeuvre.

Several centuries later, it is the heroin of a novel carrying the same name who appears in a novel by Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin, better known under the nom de plume of George Sand. All her life, this great lady of French letters pushed the boundaries imposed on women, through her talent as a writer, her dress sense, and her lovers, among which figured Frédéric Chopin. You can find her strong opinions on equality between men and women throughout her life and body of works.

Il n’est pas necessaire d’être née en France pour en être une grande dame française. Maria Sklodowska en est le parfait example. Née en Pologne, elle arrive à Paris à l’âge de 24 ans et entre à la Sorbonne, avant de prendre le nom de son mari et de franciser son prénom. Marie Curie s’impose dans le monde scientifique, en étant la première femme à obtenir un Prix Nobel, en physique, avant d’en obtenir un deuxième huit ans plus tard, en chimie cette fois. Ses travaux sur les utilisations de la radioactivité ont mené à beaucoup de découvertes très utiles.

It is not necessary to have been born in France to be a great French woman. Maria Sklodowska is the perfect example. Born in Poland, she arrives in Paris at 24 and studies at the Sorbonne, before taking her husband’s name and adopt the French version of her first name. Marie Curie dominates the scientific world, being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, for physics, before winning a second one eight years later, for chemistry this time. Her work on the uses of radiation led to a lot of very useful discoveries.

Ma quatrième femme d’influence est née entre les deux Prix Nobel de Marie Curie. Considérée comme une force importante du movement existentialiste, écrivaine et philosophe, Simone de Beauvoir a de plus été à la pointe du movement féministe français, en publiant son oeuvre phare, Le deuxième sexe, à peine neuf ans après l’obtention du droit de vote par les femmes en France. L’ensemble de son oeuvre a fait réfléchir le monde sur le rôle des femmes dans la société. Une grande dame. 

My fourth woman of influence was born between Marie Curie’s two Nobel Prizes. Considered as one of the luminaries of the existentialist movement, a writer and a philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir was on top of it on the leading edge of the feminist movement, publishing her seminal work, The Second Sex, barely nine years after women gained the right to vote in France. Her whole body of work made the world reflect on the role of women in society. A giant.

Des sciences aux arts, de la mode à la politique, du cinema au monde sportif, les Françaises sont nombreuses à nous montrer la voie à suivre. J’aurais pu parler de Colette, d’Edith Piaf, de Coco Chanel, de Catherine Deneuve, de Simone Veil ou de Charlotte Gainsbourg, mais la liste des icônes est quasiment sans fin, alors ça sera pour un autre jour.
