ELEVE J

Student J Hello everybody! If you read these lines regularly, you will know that I don’t often talk about my students, but I must make an exception today. Even if I will keep her name a secret, I would like to tell you about my student J, and of her adorable spaniel, which I will also call J, as her name starts by the same letter as her ‘mum’. Adorable, but a little bit naughty, as she loves to gnaw through her harness during ‘real’ meetings.

I do not remember how our lessons started, but I know that it has been a while that J and I have been working together. We went through pure grammar, vocabulary, listening exercises, and translation, to arrive today to a tasty mix, augmented with a lot of conversation, all of it in superb French. Even is J would be the first person to tell you that I still succeed confounding her!

I think that all this explains why I meet up with J every Thursday, almost without fail, for an hour’s worth of work and chat. We know each other well by now, after meeting several times, so we always find something to talk about. Especially these days, because we are using what I call ‘speaking images’: each week, a picture is used as a stimulus, and helps us to explore more vocabulary and grammar.

I love my lessons with J and J, because they always bring new words, from which you all benefit: I often use them to illustrate my word and expression of the day, which you can find on Twitter and Instagram. In fact, I love my lessons with J and J full stop, as they are simply very funny and full of good moments.

But above all, what I am most proud of is to have been the person J chose to help her work on her French. I am proud of the enormous amount of work and how much progress she has made during our lessons. So I hope that some of you will follow her example and will drop by to say hi. Who knows, that could be the way a beautiful and long friendship between students and their tutor starts!

For real Sunday lunchtime, I had the great pleasure to welcome Lesley, one of my students, together with her husband, at ALK HQ. I do mean “great pleasure”, as it doesn’t happen to me often. After spending a few hours in her company through our respective screens, meeting Lesley ‘for real’ was an experience I already want to repeat. So Lesley, if you read these lines, you know that you are welcome at Christmas!

Of all the students with whom I have had the privilege of spending good times learning and practising French on line, it happens that I have only met two, or rather three now: Lesley, Jennifer (and her adorable spaniel Josie), and another Jennifer, American this time, during her trip to Burgundy a few years ago.I know, what was the probability of two of my meetings being with two Jennifers!

Bizarre me direz-vous?

But Lesley brought a lot of variety (as well as a delicious bara brith, which I am savouring at this precise moment in time, buttered of course!), and not only with her very different name! First of all because of the fact that at the time of her lessons with Alphonse and me, she was aboard a camper van parked at her in-laws’. Bizarre, I hear you say? Not at all, seeing as 2020 has so far been one of the craziest of years ever.

In ‘normal’ times, Lesley crisscrosses Europe in her house on wheels, stopping hence and whence (apologies to purists), according to her whims and needs. Her visit here this Sunday was simply due to the fact that she was en route for France, the lucky duck. So she simply stopped on the way, which gave her the opportunity of meeting Alphonse, which was, as you can guess, a massive pleasure!

A bientôt !

So let me wish Lesley a “Bon voyage!”, as I know she is very happy to walk on French soil once again. I also know that she has already put her lessons with me to good use thanks to a few exchanges all in French, which, I hope, will have gone a long way to prove to her that she has reached a great level, as well as a certain ease, which will both let her continue her learning without fear of the very few mistakes to be made. See you soon!

I am busy!

I cannot quite believe that two weeks ago at the time I am writing these words, I was already very busy at The France Show 2019. I must say that it was a very good one for me this year: I have met a lot of people interested in what I do, and I have also sold a lot of books (the first volumes of my exercise books and the latest one!).

I know that the decision to come and learn with me in the kitchen or on Skype is never a spur of the moment thing and that my future clients will take the time to think before contacting me, but I am already very busy, and I love it! Right now, I have ten students, and I know that I will meet new ones in February and March, so I am very happy.

I am also busy thinking about my next book, and recording the texts from Tête à Tête, to offer them to you as listening exercises. They will appear in my online shop very soon. This is where meeting new students and talking to a public who wants to learn in a dynamic way is interesting: this idea was given to me at the Show, and I find it very good!

My books also give me some work once written, as I must hurry to finish this post in order to go to the post office to send two of them, before Mick shuts shop for his lunch break. With this weather, I think I am going to drive to the post office this time, even if I normally love walking there through the fields.

A bientôt!

And then, I must take care of my fans on social media, who seem to appreciate more and more my little exercises, such as the 4 mistakes or the scrambled words, as well as the 11 o’clock quiz (British time, of course!) on Twitter. So I must leave you here, dear friends and readers, because I have work to do. See you soon!

Macarons!

Dear friends and readers, let me tell you about Jake and Kate, my newest students. When he got in touch with me on Twitter, Jake had already hatched a very good plan: he was looking for a Christmas present which would enable him and his girlfriend to share a cool experience, while practising French. So he came over to the kitchen and we talked, and now it’s a done thing!

How great is that? It looked like the three of us were going to have a great time speaking French, and we did. For our first session, we baked macarons and got to know each other, all in French. Working on a recipe in French, chatting in French, preparing treats in French, and eating them in French (I think you get the gist of it), that’s the secret of a good kitchen session. The macarons were not a total success, if I am totally honest, but we managed a few, and they tasted good!

I absolutely love giving lessons via Skype, but having actual guests in the kitchen is even more fun. Interacting directly with people and seeing them lose all inhibitions while having fun is truly why I do what I do. Of course, receiving great compliments at the end of the session is also a great boost. The most common is ‘I didn’t know I could understand and speak so much French’, and other variations on the theme.

Come to think of it, I think having more people in the kitchen for conversation sessions would be a great idea, so I will investigate that further. MeetUp looks like a fun community, and I am sure that there are quite a few people in the Henley-on-Thames and Marlow area that would jump at the opportunity to come to my kitchen for a drink, a bite to eat and a chat, don’t you think?

MACARONS!

The france show 2018

A three-day weekend. And not of the resting on your laurels type, let me assure you! But quite tiring as it is, it is also such a fantastic 72 hours. What am I talking about? The France Show of course!

Fans of this blog will have read all about it before: a cornucopia of all things French, from a floor full of properties and tips on moving and living in France to another full of all things cultural. Food, tourism, music, wine, pétanque, and us, language providers. Another bonus of returning to the Show is that most of fellow exhibitors have now become friends.

Across the aisle from me is Françoise and her team, representing the Poiron Bonjour. Offering French courses in total immersion in her lovely home in the Vendée, Françoise is a great teacher and tremendous fun. Next to me were Andy and Jane, who together run Fellow Velo, a smart little company who offers huge fun in the form of cycling holidays in France. As you can see in the photo, Monsieur tALK is a fan and is seriously thinking of taking his bike to Provence for a little tour in the sun.

Another unexpected pleasure was meeting Alexa, who interviewed me for her excellent YouTube channel. But as I will be writing more on that front soon, I will say no more today. Of course, there were also the numerous visitors to the stand, all curious to know what ALK has to offer. I love chatting to people about my activities, and how I can help them learn French from the comfort of their own home. The tALK French trilogy was also a success, and quite a few copies of the books went to nice homes!

The cherry on the cake was not only meeting some of you, dear friends and readers, who follow my adventures on social media, but also the very kind chef Daniel Galmiche, who dropped by after his cooking demonstration, and the awesome Celia Imrie, who appreciated the Carambars I had set aside for her and kindly signed her books for me!

So if all of this sounds like a great day out to you, why not plan your trip to the next France Show early? It will take place on the last weekend of January 2019, and I shall be very happy to make your acquaintance on stand L59. I will even have a few complimentary tickets to give away. So think about it!

Alors pensez-y!
