Churches Alphonse tALK and I have a thing in common that few of you who read these lines regularly will have noticed, as I don’t think I have ever told you about it. It will be a done thing by the end of this article, another piece of the puzzle that will help you, step by step, discover who is hiding behind the quill. Even if I am not hidig my true identity, like Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton, the Netflix series, it is true that I don’t reveal everything that goes on in my life. In any case, my life is not that fascinating. But I digress, so let’s come back to the topic at hand. What do I share with Alphonse the lime? We both like churches.

When we are being tourists together, as was the case during our cruise in April, Alphonse and I almost never miss the opportunity to go into the church in the place we are visiting. The same applies to chapels, basilicas and cathedrals, too. No matter the size, the architecture of the place, although most of the time very interesting, is not the main reason for our visit. No, what we are after is the tranquillity, the peace, and the serenity that we get from these places, that are almost always quiet, if not slient.

I truly adore this feeling. Brought up a Catholic, I will not describe myself as equipped with a bomb-proof faith, but I always feel the comforting aspect of these religious places. As soon as I go through the door, I feel calmer, and I know that I am no longer alone with my thoughts. A weird feeling, it is true, but it is real, and deep. I hesitated to use the word “serenity” earlier, but this feeling gets close to it, as if someone recognises me. As if, all of a sudden, someone is listening and understands me.

When I can, and it is almost always the case, I leave behind me a little, fleeting, but sincere trace of my presence. I like to light a candle and to watch its little light, soft but solid. There and then, I think of all the people I love, whether they be with us still, or “behind the flowers”, as Véronique Sanson says in her song. My grandparents figure heavily in my thoughts, and I smile when I think of my Pépé Marcel’s asparagus, or my Mémé Suzanne’s chocolate cake…

A bientôt !

Of course, I want to ask you if, like me, you appreciate churches, for their architecture, their quietness, for the fact that they bring you a feeling of peace and tranquillity, as they do for me. I will understand that, on the other hand, you never go in, and never feel the need to visit one when you are discovering new landscapes. I would love to chat to you about it, so don’t hesitate to come and chat on Twitter or Instagram. See you soon!
