What makes a good pub?

We all need a bit of luck in our lives, don’t we? I consider myself very lucky to have a good local pub, the Stag & Huntsman, in the charming village of Hambleden. Actually, no, let me rephrase that. It is not good, it is excellent.

First of all, I can easily and safely walk to it in about 15 minutes. Which eliminates the need to drive, a vast advantage if you fancy a night cap or a glass of wine (or two!) with a meal. The fact that I walk through two gorgeous fields to get there and back is a bonus in my book!

My second point is that the S&H is not simply a pub. On top of the fact you can obviously appreciate excellent beers there, the kitchens also serve great food. A new team, lead by the very welcoming Andrew, took over the pub just before Christmas last year, and made a few changes, to make what was already a great place to visit an even better one.

One such change is a streamlined, seasonal and appetising menu, which lets you choose well-balanced and beautifully executed dishes, accompanied by a tasty wine list. Also new these past few weeks are the cocktails, which are definitely worth a shot, and I will have to report on them on social media once I have had more of them, so keep an eye on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!

The pub itself is very traditional, but has a lovely garden, a couple of dining rooms, and a comfy drawing room, where you can savour your coffee and after-dinner drinks in a cosy atmosphere, without forgetting some very comfortable and well decorated bedrooms for the weary traveller.

As always, the people are the most important aspect of a business, and I can’t praise Andrew and his team enough for the warmth of their welcome and the attention lavished on their guests. But don’t take my word for it and plan a visit to Hambleden soon. And don’t forget to drop by the cottage, too!
