Lors d’une récente leçon où je suis apparu en tant qu’invité, les étudiants de Sarah, qui avaient travaillé avec elle sur les questions et comment en poser, m’ont demandé plein de trucs sympa, et j’ai été très content de répondre. Tous les sujets ont été abordés, ou presque, mais une question très inattendue m’a pris au dépourvu et m’a fait réfléchir, même si j’ai été capable d’y répondre immédiatement. 

A little walk During a recent lesson where I appeared as a guest, Sarah’s students, who had worked with her on questions and how to frame them, asked me about a lot of cool stuff, and I was very happy to answer. All topics were breached, or almost all, but a very unexpected question took me aback and made me think, even if I was able to answer it immediately.

La question en question ? « Quelle est votre promenade préférée du côté de là où vous habitez ? » En plus d’être grammaticalement parfaite et complexe, elle a tout de suite évoqué un petit parcours que j’effectue presque tous les jours, pour prendre l’air, me changer les idées, et surtout pour essayer de contrebalancer les biscuits et autres gourmandises dont j’abuse parfois ! Alors voici ma réponse. 

The question in question ? « What is your favourite walk near where you live ? » On top of being grammatically perfect and complex, it evoked straight away the little journey I undertake almost every day, to get some fresh air, ring the changes, and especially to try to offset the biscuits and other treats, of which I eat too much sometimes ! So here is my answer.

Je sors de chez moi et tourne à gauche, pour rejoindre un chemin de randonnée qui passe à côté de la marina d’Hambleden, avant de traverser la Tamise grâce à la passerelle qui enjambe les écluses. Au niveau du cottage du gardien d’écluse, je tourne à gauche, sur un chemin qui longe la rivière, avant de me diriger vers le Flower Pot (le Pot de Fleurs), un pub sympa. Là, je tourne à droite et tout de suite à gauche pour monter un joli sentier qui traverse la forêt.

I leave my house and turn left, to join a right of way which runs parallel to the Hambleden marina, before crossing the Thames thanks to the walkway that straddles the weir. Right by the lock keeper’s cottage, I turn left, on a path that runs along the river, before heading for the Flower Pot, a cool pub. There, I turn right and immediately left to go up a pretty path that goes through the woods. 

C’est là que j’ai ramassé de belles châtaignes cet automne. Je regarde aussi toujours si je vois des champignons, mais jusqu’à présent, je n’ai pas eu de chance de ce côté-là. Par contre, j’ai toujours la chance de voir et surtout d’entendre beaucoup d’oiseaux, et de rencontrer des toutous qui n’y connaissent rien à la distance sociale ! Je redescends ensuite la pente, avant de retrouver le Flower Pot et passer à travers champs pour revenir sur mes pas afin d’atteindre le QG d’ALK et une tasse de thé.

It is there that I collected beautiful chestnuts this autumn. I also always look to see if I can find mushrooms, but so far, I haven’t had any luck on that front. On the other hand, I am always lucky enough to see, and especially hear a lot of birds, and to meet doggies who know nothing about social distancing ! I then go down the slope, before encountering the Flower Pot again and go through the fields to retrace my steps in order to reach ALK HQ and a cup of tea.

Vous trouverez peut-être que cette promenade n’est pas très intéressante, et un peu monotone si accomplie tous les jours, mais moi je l’aime bien, car elle me permet de voir les saisons qui changent, et de voir des gens en plein air, ce qui me fait beaucoup de bien ces temps-ci. J’espère que vous me ferez le plaisir de me raconter votre promenade préférée à votre tour, car j’aimerais bien vous lire. A bientôt ! 

You may find this walk somewhat boring, and a little monotonous if done every day, but I like it, because it enables me to see the changing seasons, and to see people in the open air, which does me a lot of good these days. Alors que j’écris ces quelques lignes, je suis assis sur la dernière chaise dans un appartement presque vide, au cœur de Londres. Les déménageurs ont fait un superbe travail, et tout un pan de ma vie est habilement empilé dans un énorme camion. La seule raison pour laquelle mon siège est encore là ? Je la ramène avec moi au nouveau QG d’ALK. Pour le reste, c’est bel et bien la fin d’une époque. 

The end of an era As I write these lines, I am sitting on the last chair in an almost empty apartment, in the heart of London. The removal men have done a sterling job, and a whole chapter of my life is now beautifully piled up in an enormous van. The only reason for my seat to still be there ? I am taking it with me to the new ALK HQ. As for the rest, it is well and truly the end of an era.

Mes abonné.e.s auront sûrement vu, particulièrement sur Twitter et Instagram, quelques photos et commentaires un peu cryptiques ces dernières semaines, et ce déménagement en est l’origine : après presque quinze ans, où j’ai vécu et travaillé à Londres, l’appartement est enfin vendu. Pas de regrets, ou de sentiments aigres-doux, je n’habite plus ici. 

My followers will have no doubt seen, particularly on Twitter and Instagram, a few photos and comments, somewhat cryptic, over the last few weeks, the origin of which is this move: after nearly fifteen years, during which I lived and worked in London, the apartment has finally sold. No regrets, no bittersweet feelings, I don’t live here anymore. 

Vous saurez que j’habite depuis presque cinq ans près de Henley-on-Thames, où, en conditions normales, je reçois mes étudiants dans la cuisine, ou leur parle à partir de mon petit bureau sur le palier. Mais vous ne saviez peut-être pas qu’avant cela, je faisais la même chose à partir d’un appartement à Islington, une région juste au nord du centre de Londres. Mais plus maintenant car l’appartement est enfin vendu. 

You will know that for nearly five years  I have lived near Henley-on-Thames, where, in normal conditions, I receive my students in the kitchen or talk to them from my little study on the landing. But you might not know that before that, I did the same thing from a flat in Islington, a region just north of the centre of London. But not anymore, as the flat is finally sold.

Je dis ‘enfin’, car le processus n’a été ni simple, ni rapide. Mais restons philosophes et positifs, c’est maintenant chose faite, et après un nettoyage final hier, les clés changeront de mains demain. J’avais pensé que j’aurais été triste de laisser derrière moi toute cette partie de ma vie, et de quitter définitivement l’appartement, mais même pas. J’ai gardé avec moi quelques objets, mais le reste est désormais dans des cartons. 

I am saying ‘finally’, as the process was neither simple, nor fast. But we have to remain philosophical and positive, as it is now done, and after one last cleaning session yesterday, keys will change hands tomorrow. I had been thinking that I would be sad to leave behind me this part of my life, and to leave the flat for good, but I’m not. I kept with me a few objects, but the rest is now in cardboard boxes. 

Il ne me reste plus maintenant qu’à trouver une maison assez grande pour nous accueillir, moi et mes affaires ! J’en ai bien repéré une, mais si son achat prend autant de temps que la vente de mon ex-chez-moi, je ne suis pas rendu, comme on dit. Je vous tiendrai bien sûr au courant. En attendant, j’espère que vous me ferez le plaisir de me raconter vos déménagements, en laissant un commentaire ou en passant sur les médias sociaux. A bientôt ! 

All that is left to do now is to find a house big enough to welcome us, me and all my stuff ! I have seen one I like, but if its purchase takes as much time as the sale of my former home, I’m not out of the woods, as they say. I will of course keep you posted.
