To students anywhere

In this blog, I would like to talk directly to you, lovely people. Not as some sort of oracle, you understand, but as a teacher trying to reach students. I hope therefore that none of you will find this post too forward. I have been told that a few of you (I’d like to think a LOT of you!) are reading my blog on a regular basis and, in some cases, have been reading my output since my first post. And that makes me very happy and proud!

I also like to think that some of you will say: ‘I wish my French was good enough that I could read the French version at the bottom without any help’. Others will be thinking: ‘I can’t read any of this! My French is so rusty, I’ll never manage!’ Maybe a few of you will notice the differences between the two versions of my posts and note the useful phrases they want to use next time they converse in French. Or even spot the odd mistakes and let me know about them!

Whichever group you belong to, whether you are chatty, rusty or confident, I would love to hear from you, as I would love for us to work together. If you studied a bit of French at school but can’t remember much, we can get back to the basics. If you enjoy chatting to the market stallholders on holidays in France, we can make sure you do so naturally and easily. And if you are looking for someone to take you through the intricacies of French grammar that have so far escaped you, I’m the one you need. We can do this in our London or Henley-on-Thames kitchens, face to face, with or without baking, or via Skype, from the comfort of your own home.

AUX ELEVES, OU QU”ILS SOIENT

Dans ce blog, je voudrais vous parler directement, chers amis. Non pas comme un oracle, vous comprenez bien, mais en tant que prof, essayant de contacter des élèves. J’espère donc qu’aucun d’entre vous ne trouvera ceci trop présomptueux. On m’a dit que quelques uns d’entre vous (j’aimerais dire BEAUCOUP d’entre vous!) lisent mon blog régulièrement, et, dans certains cas, le font depuis le premier jour. Et j’en suis très heureux et fier!

j’aime aussi à penser que certains d’entre vous diront: ‘Si seulement mon français était assez bon pour que je puisse lire la version française là, en bas, sans qu’on m’aide’. D’autres penseront: ‘Je n’y comprends rien! Mon français est trop rouillé, je n’y arriverai jamais!’ Peut-être certains noteront les différences entre les deux versions de mon blog et les expressions utiles dont ils peuvent se servie la prochaine fois qu’ils conversent en français. Ou bien même remarqueront-ils les quelques erreurs et me le feront-ils savoir!

Peu importe à quel groupe vous appartenez, que vous soyez rouillé, causant ou confiant, j’aimerais bien faire votre connaissance, car j’aimerais tellement travailler avec vous. Si vous avez appris un peu de français à l’école mais avez tout oublié, on peut recommencer au début. Si vous aimez causer aux marchands sur les marchés français, on peut faire en sorte que vous le fassiez naturellement et facilement. Et si vous cherchez quelqu’un pour vous conduire à travers les complexités de la langue française qui vous ont toujours échappé, je suis celui dont vous avez besoin. Nous pouvons nous rencontrer dans la cuisine, à Londres ou à Henley-on-Thames, en tête-à tête, en faisant un gâteau ou pas, ou à travers Skype, à partir de votre petit chez-vous.

In the thick of it

I’m teaching again. Properly. And this time, I love it. Properly. After fifteen years in secondary schools, where teaching was always at best possible and at the worst of time a total nightmare (and not often because of the students…), I am doing what I love again. And this thanks to a bunch of fantastic people who have put their trust in me to refresh a rusty skill, add to their knowledge of grammar or simply want to enjoy conversing in French again. With me.

I will not name them all, as they know who they are, but I thank them. They are all so very different, which could be a problem in a normal context, but here at ALK, we specialise in approaching each of our new students as individuals. I always give my students a free session so that we can sort out all the logistical details, as well as, more importantly, decide on a course of action that will enable each of them to reach the goals they have set themselves.

After this, the work begins in earnest: tailor-made resources, preparation, homework, marking, progress tracking, it all comes on top of our ‘time’ together, all included in the package I offer. And this time, it is fun. Seeing my students, either face to face in the ALK kitchen or via Skype is a pleasure, and more often than not, there’s laughter and always an awful lot of learning, on both sides. And it is with great pleasure that I can announce that ALK is now an international business, with clients in America and Switzerland.

Although the private tuition lessons are fun, let’s not forget the group kitchen sessions, where friends and/or colleagues can come practise some French while baking and cooking. Those informal gatherings also work on a corporate level, or as a birthday or anniversary gift. They can also be an alternative idea for stag and hen dos! So what are you waiting for? Get in touch!

DANS LE VIF DU SUJET

Je suis redevenu prof. Comme il faut. Et cette fois, j’adore ça. Comme il faut. Après quinze ans en collège-lycée, où enseigner était au mieux possible et au pire un véritable cauchemar (et pas souvent à cause de mes élèves…), je fais de nouveau ce que j’aime faire. Et cela grâce à un groupe de supers clients qui me font confiance pour rafraîchir un talent rouillé, améliorer leur connaissance de la grammaire ou veulent simplement apprécier une bonne conversion en français. Avec moi.

Je ne les nommerai pas tous, vu qu’ils savent qui ils sont, mais je les remercie. Ils sont tous très différents, ce qui pourrait être un problème dans un contexte normal, mais ici à ALK, on est expert en ce qui concerne notre approche individuelle de chaque élève. Je fais toujours cadeau d’une leçon gratuite à mes étudiants, pour régler tous les détails logistiques, et pour aussi, et ce de façon plus importante, décider de la ligne à suivre pour que chacun attaigne les buts qu’il s’est fixés.

C’est après que le vrai travail commence: les ressources faites sur-mesure, la préparation, les devoirs, les corrections, le suivi des progrès, tout ça en plus des heures ‘entre nous’; et tout ça fait partie du service. Et cette fois, je m’amuse. Voir mes étudiants, soit face à face dans la cuisine au QG d’ALK ou sur Skype, est un véritable plaisir, et en plus, on rigole souvent et on apprend toujours beaucoup, des deux côtés. Et c’est avec grand plaisir que je peux vous annoncer qu’ALK est maintenant une entreprise internationale, avec des clients aux Etats-Unis et en Suisse.

Même si les leçons privées sont amusantes, n’oublions pas les cours en groupe en cuisine, où les amis et/ou collègues peuvent venir pratiquer leur français en faisant un peu de cuisine ou de pâtisserie. Ces petites sessions fonctionnent également avec les entreprises, ou comme cadeau d’anniversaire. Elles peuvent aussi offrir une idée un peu alternative pour les enterrements de vie de jeune fille, et de jeune garçon! Alors qu’attendez-vous? Faites-nous signe!!
