Kitchen – Arnaud's Language Kitchen

UNE COLLABORATION

J’espère que vous me pardonnerez tous et toutes cet excès d’arrogance, mais j’aimerais vous parler de ce qui va se passer demain à dix heures. Avant de tout vous raconter, je dois revenir environ un mois en arrière, quand Sarah, qui est à la tête de Aspire Languages, m’a contacté pour me demander si j’étais partant pour participer à un petit projet. Elle avait à peine commencé de l’expliquer que j’ai dit oui !

A collaboration I hope that all of you will forgive me this excess of hubris, but I would like to tell you about what is going to happen tomorrow at ten. Before I tell you everything, I must go back almost a month, when Sarah, who is heading Aspire Languages, contacted me to ask me if I was interested in participating in a little project. She had barely started telling me about it when I said yes !

Alors demain, à l’heure dite, je serai dans ma cuisine, devant mon ordinateur, prêt à rencontrer dix personnes, avec devant moi les ingrédients et les ustensiles pour faire un gâteau. L’idée n’est pas nouvelle pour moi, car ces sessions font partie de ce que j’offre à travers Arnaud’s Language Kitchen (il y a comme qui dirait un indice dans le nom). Mais c’est la première fois que j’en mènerai une sur Zoom, grâce à Sarah et à ses très nombreux contacts.

So tomorrow, at said hour, I will be in my kitchen, in front of my computer, ready to meet ten people, with in front of me the ingredients and utensils needed to bake a cake. The idea is not new to me, because these sessions are part of what I offer through Arnaud’s Language Kitchen (there’s a bit of a clue in the name). But it is the first time that I will be leading one through Zoom, thanks to Sarah and her numerous contacts.

Je parie que beaucoup d’entre vous auront déjà deviné que la recette que nous suivrons ensemble est celle du far breton, que nous préparerons en français, et qui a l’avantage d’être rapide. A la fin de notre session, je devrai pouvoir admirer dix fars, tous plus dorés les uns que les autres. Et pendant que dix fours font leur travail, je sais que je vais devoir répondre à beaucoup de questions !

I bet that a lot of you will have guessed that the recipe we will follow together is that of the far breton, which we will prepare in French, and which has the advantage of being quick. At the end of our session, I should be able to admire ten fars, all more golden the one than the other. And while ten ovens are doing their stuff, I know I will have to answer a lot of questions !

Car en plus de faire un peu de cuisine, nous allons bien sûr profiter de ce temps précieux pour discuter en français, en posant plein de questions. Je ne sais pas quelles questions, car je n’ai pas voulu les voir en avance, mais je sais qu’elles seront toutes intéressantes, car nos dix invité.e.s ont été trié.e.s sur le volet. Je sais que Sarah prendra des notes sur le vocabulaire utilisé et les enverra à nos élèves. Comme vous voyez, on prend notre collaboration très au sérieux.

Because on top of baking a bit, we are of course going to take advantage of this precious time to chat in French, by asking a lot of questions. I don’t know which questions, because I didn’t want to see them in advance, but I know that they will all be interesting, as our ten guests have been chosen carefully. I know that Sarah will take notes on the vocabulary we use and will send them to our students. As you can see, we are taking our collaboration very seriously.

Je pense ne pas avoir à vous dire à quel point j’ai hâte d’être à demain, même si je sais que notre session va être très exigeante ! Mais grâce à Sarah, qui a tout organisé de manière si professionnelle, je sais aussi que tout va bien se passer, et que nous passerons un bon moment. Alors si jamais vous voulez prendre part à la prochaine session, n’hésitez pas à me contacter, ou à parler à Sarah. On trouvera sûrement une petite place pour vous !

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how much I am looking forward to tomorrow, even if I know that our session will be demanding ! But thanks to Sarah, who organised everything in such a professional manner, I also know that everything will be ok, and that we’ll have a good time. Macarons!

Dear friends and readers, let me tell you about Jake and Kate, my newest students. When he got in touch with me on Twitter, Jake had already hatched a very good plan: he was looking for a Christmas present which would enable him and his girlfriend to share a cool experience, while practising French. So he came over to the kitchen and we talked, and now it’s a done thing!

How great is that? It looked like the three of us were going to have a great time speaking French, and we did. For our first session, we baked macarons and got to know each other, all in French. Working on a recipe in French, chatting in French, preparing treats in French, and eating them in French (I think you get the gist of it), that’s the secret of a good kitchen session. The macarons were not a total success, if I am totally honest, but we managed a few, and they tasted good!

I absolutely love giving lessons via Skype, but having actual guests in the kitchen is even more fun. Interacting directly with people and seeing them lose all inhibitions while having fun is truly why I do what I do. Of course, receiving great compliments at the end of the session is also a great boost. The most common is ‘I didn’t know I could understand and speak so much French’, and other variations on the theme.

Come to think of it, I think having more people in the kitchen for conversation sessions would be a great idea, so I will investigate that further. MeetUp looks like a fun community, and I am sure that there are quite a few people in the Henley-on-Thames and Marlow area that would jump at the opportunity to come to my kitchen for a drink, a bite to eat and a chat, don’t you think?

MACARONS!

Chers amis et lecteurs, laissez-moi vous parler de Jake et Kate, mes nouveaux étudiants. Quand il m’a contacté sur Twitter, Jake avait déjà pensé à un super stratagème: il cherchait un cadeau de Noël qui leur permettrait, à lui et sa copine, de partager une bonne expérience, tout en pratiquant le français. Alors il est venu me voir dans ma cuisine, on a causé, et voilà, c’est fait!

C’est pas cool, ça? Je savais qu’on allait bien s’amuser tous les trois, à causer français, et ça a été le cas. Pour notre première leçon, on a préparé des macarons et on a fait connaissance, tout en français. Travailler sur une recette en français, causer en français, préparer des gâteries en français, et les manger en français (je pense que vous avez compris), voilà le secret d’une bonne session en cuisine. Les macarons n’ont pas été un franc succès, je vous l’accorde, mais on a en a réussi quelques uns, et ils étaient bons!

J’adore absolument donner des leçons sur Skype, mais avoir de vrais invités dans la cuisine est encore plus fun. L’interaction directe avec des gens et les voir perdre toute inhibition en s’amusant, voilà vraiment la raison pour laquelle je fais ce que je fais. Bien sûr, recevoir des compliments à la fin de la leçon fait aussi beaucoup de bien. Le plus courant est ‘Je ne savais pas je je pouvais comprendre et parler autant de français.’, et d’autres variantes sur le même thème.

Maintenant que j’y pense, je pense qu’accueillir plus de personnes dans ma cuisine pour des cours de conversation serait une une bonne idée, alors je vais regarder comment je pourrai faire ça. MeetUp a l’air d’être une bonne communauté, et je suis sûr qu’il y a pas mal de gens autour de Henley-on-Thames et Marlow qui apprécieraient de pouvoir venir dans ma cuisine pour un verre, un morceau à manger et un peu de conversation, vous ne croyez-pas?
