A guilty pleasure on TV

It’s confession time again, and this time, my thoughts have turned to the television. As I am typing this, an American cooking programme is showing on the Food Network and I am transfixed. The Pioneer Woman is on, and I simply have to watch her cook her way through a very American repertoire for her family, her friends and all the ranch workers. As she puts it, she lives in the middle of nowhere, on a huge cattle ranch, with her husband and four kids, and she cooks a lot.

Nothing is low fat or sugar free, and I am sure Mrs. Drummond will not mind me saying that it is not very sophisticated cuisine she is preparing day in, day out, but I simply admire her for the way she provides for her kin. She cooks with love and shops in bulk, goes for easy soups and amazing-looking burgers, uses a lot of infamous plastic cheese and goes Tex-Mex a lot. And yet I like her, because she does it all with great integrity and a lovely manner: she makes no excuses about cooking what her family likes to eat, and I love that. So here’s to you, Pioneer Woman!

The other American food programme that has me transfixed is called The Barefoot Contessa, which is the screen name of Ina Garten, a former White House employee. She also cooks American fare, and is equally fascinating. But here the comparison between the two ends, as the Contessa lives, cooks and entertains differently, in a famous posh part of the East coast of America, not in the wild wild West.
